These cookies are like edible coloring sheets! We start by stenciling the design onto each cookie with royal icing, then kids and adults can have fun painting inside the lines using edible paint palettes. It’s a playful and creative twist on classic cookie decorating, letting everyone add their own personal touches. Using stencils and painted details, these cookies create bold, eye-catching patterns while giving decorators of all ages the chance to explore color and design. Whether for kids or experienced decorators, they’re just as fun to make as they are to admire.

Painted Your Own Unicorn Sugar Cookies

After baking your cookies, stencil the design onto each one with royal icing. Once the stencil is set, decorators can use edible paint palettes to fill in the design, adding color, shading, and details to make each cookie uniquely their own.br>

  • Run Sugar Royal Icing
  • Black stiff royal icing
  • Mini turntable and mat
  • Stencil (e.g., unicorn, rainbow, or desired design)
  • Scraper or offset spatula

Instructions

Bake the cookies. Roll out cookie dough, cut shapes, and bake according to your recipe. Allow cookies to cool completely.
Prepare and flood icing. Mix royal icing to a run sugar/flood consistency. Pipe the icing onto the cookies and use a scribe tool to smooth the surface. Allow it to set completely.
Stencil the design. Place the stencil on each cookie and use black stiff royal icing with a scraper or offset spatula to carefully press the design onto the cookie surface.
Remove stencil and set. Gently lift the stencil and allow the image to dry before painting.
Paint the details. Place the cookie on a mini turntable. Use edible paint palettes, water, and a brush to fill in the stenciled image with color.
Dry completely. Let painted cookies dry fully before stacking, packaging, or serving.
Encourage creativity. These cookies are perfect for kids to color in, experiment with colors, and enjoy a fun, hands-on decorating activity.
