Hard Candy Ornaments

Idea gallery #179
Ingredients and Supplies
  • baking sheet
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • ribbon
  • assorted Christmas cookie cutters
  • hard candy mix
  • candy thermometer
  • assorted gel food colors
  • flavorings
Spray a baking sheet or a slab of marble with cooking spray. Tie ribbons for hanging the cookie cutter ornaments around the top of the cookie cutter (may need to use tape to hold the ribbon in place). Lay the cutters on the sprayed surface. Make a batch of hard candy, following directions on hard candy mix package, using a candy thermometer to reach 300 degrees. The top pan in the double boiler set is a good size of pan to use. For red ornaments, use red food color (use gel color for the colors as they dissolve better than paste colors) and cinnamon oil; for green use green food color and lime concentrated flavor; for yellow, use yellow food color and lemon concentrated flavor. After the syrup reaches 300 degrees, pour the hot syrup into the cookie cutters, filling 1/2 to 2/3 full. One package hard candy mix does 5 or 6 cookie cutter ornaments.
