Buttercream Frosting

Cakes, cookies and cupcakes are taste even better with the addition of buttercream frosting on top! Buttercream frosting can also be called buttercream icing interchangeably in most parts of the United States. If someone refers to simply frosting or icing, they are still most likely talking about buttercream frosting. Buttercream frosting can be purchased ready-made or in a mix or made at home from a scratch recipe. Buttercream frosting can be made from a wide variety of very different recipes. Generally buttercream frosting recipes are made from a combination of fat and sugar and a few other ingredients. The fat in buttercream frosting can be butter or shortening or a combination of the two. The sugar can be granulated or powdered and additional sweetness may come from white chocolate, cream cheese and flavorings. Some buttercream frosting recipes also include eggs, egg yolks or egg whites these are usually called Italian or French meringue buttercream frosting recipes. Buttercream frosting can be used to frost cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Some types of buttercream frosting can also be used to decorate with; if it is a soft frosting it may not hold up well enough to be used for decorating. Buttercream frosting can be tinted with gel or powdered food coloring and then placed into a pastry bag which is usually fitted with a decorating tip. Just by changing the decorating tip hundreds of different decorations can be made using buttercream frosting.
