Dusting Powders can give instant shimmer or color to buttercream flowers, royal icing flowers, rolled fondant and gumpaste pieces, candy coating or chocolate pieces. Simply dip a soft brush into the dust and brush it on dry, or for a much bolder look, make a dust paint using one of the three recipes below: Tylose, Lemon Oil or White Spirits (alcohol). Most of our Dusting Powders are not FDA approved, but are pending approval. We do have a line of FDA approved dusts- Platinum Dusts. They have a pearl-like finish, with several sublte colors available. AVAILABLE DUSTING POWDERS
Dusting Powders are available in: Platinum Dusts the only FDA approved dusting powders that produce a shimmery luster. Use silver silk on flowers made from colored gum paste. When dusted on white petals, the other pearls in the range exhibit a subtle colored sheen by reflection, although displaying no apparent color. Luster Dusts give subtle color with a sheen finish. In the dry form, use them for dusting. They may be used on their own, or mixed with similar colored dusts to create a lustrous sheen without lightening the color. Pearl Dusts produce a shimmery luster. Use super pearl on flowers made from colored gum paste. When dusted on white petals, the other pearls in the range exhibit a subtle colored sheen by reflection, although displaying no apparent color. Sparkle Dusts hare a larger grain size with a sparkling finish. Gives gumpaste flowers a wet or dewy look, with just a touch of color, except for white. Petal Dusts are used to achieve deeper hues with a matte finish. When brushed on petals of white or pastel gum paste flowers, a realistic effect is created. Highlighters have a high sheen finish, and are available in silver or gold. They are non-edible. If wanting silver or gold for edible purposes, use Super Gold and Moonstone Silver
If you are looking for a specific color and it is not available, consider mixing colors! All of the dust mix wonderfully and the possibilities of colors are endless!
For a Paint For most items, you can just brush on the dry dust. If you are wanting a stronger, brighter color, create a "paint" by following on of the recipes below. Tylose Paint: 1/4 teaspoon tylose powder (76-3530) 1 Tablespoon boiling water Additional boiling water Mix the above and let set (like gelatin). Add a bit more boiling water until like piping gel. Thin with boiling water. Add Dusting Powder to the mixture until an easily applied painting consistency is achieved. Lemon Oil: Lemon oil (#42-525) Stir lemon, a drop at a time, into the dust until you reach the desired consistency that you like to paint with. Your edible project will have a lemon flavor. White Spirits: You may also use vodka. Stir the alcohol, a drop at a time, into the dust until you reach the desired consistency that you like to paint with. We have noticed that the edges of the flowers may melt using this method.
