Half round cake pan are usually used to make round cakes. Smaller ovens do not fit 16" and 18" round and often the half rounds will fit instead. Half rounds will also bake more quickly which can help to prevent the edges of such large cakes from browning or drying out. Place two half rounds together to create regular round layers.
